Tanglewood BMX-Getting Started
You will need a bike, long pants, long sleeve shirt and a full-face helmet. We will look at your bike and check it over for safety. Safety is the most important aspect at Tanglewood BMX. Our track operates under the sanctioning body of the National Bicycle League (NBL).

The NBL provides us with our rules, keeps up with our points and most importantly provides us our insurance. The NBL fees are $45.00 for one year from the day to sign up. Once you area member you can race at any NBL track anywhere in the USA.

Practice is every Tuesday and Thursday from 6 to 8 pm. Practice fees are $2. All practices are "open" practices. That means that all ages and abilities are on the track at the same time. It is very important to keep an eye out for the other riders as everyone is traveling at a different speed and ability. We keep safety at the forefront of all our activities. Helmets should be buckled and tight. Shirts and pants should be rolled down except when it is a safety hazard. No riding the track backwards at any time. Cutting the track can be very dangerous as well.

Races are almost every Saturday night. Practice and registration is from 5:00pm to 6:00pm and we race at approximately 6:30pm. Race fees range from as low as $7.00, pre-registration/points only to $10.00 for regular registration/trophy.

You can ride any bicycle. The NBL has two different classes for bike sizes. Bikes with tires sizes 20 inches and under are referred to as BMX. Those bikes with 24 inch or larger tires are considered as Cruisers. Mountain bikes are considered as a cruiser class. Cruisers and 20-inch bikes do not race in the same motto. Riders race in classes based on age and ability. All riders start out as Rookies. The most important thing is to ride and have fun. The more that you do those two things the better your abilities and racing will become. There are a lot of experienced riders that will assist the new riders even without solicitation of help. The idea is to share the experiences and help everyone to achieve.

Tanglewood BMX is owned and operated by the Winston-Salem BMX Parent's Association. We are a 501-C-3 tax-exempt organization. We are all here to have fun and enjoy the wonderful facility that we have. It takes all of us to keep Tanglewood BMX up to the standards that we enjoy. All help and suggestions are greatly appreciated.
